BAFTA nomination for Virunga
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has unveiled its annual film award nominations including the nominees for the Best Documentary. I’m very excited and proud that Virunga made the cut with the other four nominees being 20 Feet From Stardom, 20,000 Days on Earth, Citizenfour and Finding Vivian Maier.
BAFTA NOMINATION: THE BIGGER PICTURE
The media attention the nomination creates isn’t only great news for the documentary and the team behind it but also for the national park, its rangers and the mountain gorillas that call the region their home. As illustrated in the film, protecting the park also has a significant positive impact on the local communities. The park can help create more stability in the region, function as a base for community projects, regeneration and provide considerable income from tourism.
For more information, take a look at Virunga producer Joanna Natasegara’s article in The Guardian. For up-to-date news from Virunga, make sure to check out the park’s brilliant website: virunga.org
The Bafta awards ceremony is held on Sunday the 8th of February at the Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Garden.
