Game On with BBC iPlayer comedy ‘Playing Ball’
Netball, high ambitions and homicidal tendencies cross paths in this deliciously dark BBC Drama comedy written by Selina Lim and directed by Rachna Suri.
Part of the strand ‘Original Drama Shorts’ which showcases hot new talent, Playing Ball is one of three films to be premiered on BBC iPlayer in July 2015 together with Oakwood and Is This Thing On? The films were BBC in-house productions produced by Catherine Moulton and executive produced by Hilary Salmon. The strand debuted in 2014, providing a similar platform to that of Channel 4’s ‘Coming Up’ for both discovering talent as well as giving emerging writers and directors an opportunity to make their leap onto broadcast drama.
Rachna Suri is a London-based director, whose debut short Our Lad premiered at the London Film Festival in 2013. She is also a co-director of PEEK Films together with Zara Hayes. I have previously worked with Rachna on Our Lad as well as edited multiple Christie’s art documentary projects for PEEK Films.
PLAYING BALL – SYNOPSIS
When Charlie quits the netball team that her mother coaches, she kick-starts a chain of events that will test their relationship. Darkly comic, this short explores the relationship between mothers and daughters, and how far we will go for family.
