Broadcasts, World Class Festivals, Awards and Rapturous Reviews
Film Editor News: From Tribeca Film Festival to Hot Docs Documentary Festival, and Annecy International Animated Film Festival to Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival, it has been a busy Spring on the festival front. Hot on the heels are summer broadcasts scheduled on the BBC, Arte and RUV as well as Out of Thin Air‘s global launch on Netflix.
OUT OF THIN AIR’S WORLD PREMIERE IS A SELLOUT
Out of Thin Air had its World Premiere at the Hot Docs International Documentary Festival in Toronto in the beginning of the month. The film got an enthusiastic reception with the two scheduled screenings selling out quickly, prompting the festival to add a third screening which also sold out. The Iceland-set crime mystery is also in competition at the NorthWestFest in Edmonton and will receive its European Premiere at the Sheffield Doc/Fest in June.
Out of Thin Air will be broadcast this summer by BBC Storyville in the United Kingdom and RUV in Iceland, followed by a global release on Netflix.
THE LAST ANIMALS RECEIVES CRITICAL PRAISE
Going up against Out of Thin Air in the NorthWestFest competition is another feature documentary, The Last Animals, on which I did some editing. This documentary charts conservationists’ desperate battle to save rhinos and elephants from going extinct in the hands of poachers and multi-national crime syndicates.
The documentary premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York in April and Screen Daily described it as “a galvanising documentary which is a potent mix of film and message”.
GENERATION RIGHT WINS BEST DOCUMENTARY
Nearly two years into its festival run, Michelle Coomber’s timely documentary about the conservative shift in British politics, Generation Right, just scooped another award. This time it was for Best Documentary at the London Classic Film Festival.
JOHNNO’S DEAD IS SELECTED FOR A-LIST FESTIVALS
Johnno’s Dead, Chris Shepherd’s darkly comic follow up to Dad’s Dead, continues its impressive festival run. Recent outings include Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival in France, the Oscar-qualifying Tampere Short Film Festival in Finland and Stuttgart International Animation Film Festival. Also, at the Cardiff International Animation Festival Johnno’s Dead was awarded with a Special Mention.
The short animation can next be seen in France and Germany on the Arte TV channel as well as at world’s most prestigious animation festival Annecy International Animated Film Festival.
IN THE PIPELINE
In other news, I’m currently editing an exciting 4-part HBO docudrama crime series. Dubbed as the Asian ‘Making a Murderer’, the series delves into one of the most infamous crime mysteries in Indian history. Further details about the series are still tightly under wraps, so watch this space…
